How does this series compare with the Parker series?

Heists are sillier/lighter and don’t feel as real. I’ve read all the Parker books and decided to finally start this series. Writing is still crisp and it moves quickly but the plot is a shadow of a Parker plot and the humor isn’t enough to make up the difference. Funny situations, but not really funny character moments. This series sounds fun, but I have one big concern: I don’t like “loser” characters, and stories in which nothing goes right, ever—I gave up on the Simpsons because I was sick of Homer being the stupid loser all the time. Should I pick up this series?
Kevin I’ve only read this first book in the series. Dortmunder is not a loser in this story. He’s unlucky for sure but generally competent.
