It features Hesse's signature themes of freedom vs. security, sensuality vs. renunciation, the life of the mind vs. the life of the senses. It has an interesting commentary on art. A very philosophical novel. That said, as a woman, I found this one of Hesse's more sexist works. Much of the plot revolves around a character who is, for all intents and purposes, a Don Juan who roams the countryside seducing every woman in his path. Unfortunately, what was intended to be a sympathetic character came off as kind of a dick more often than not. Also, the fact that he never contracted an STD reeeeeally strained my suspension of disbelief. ;)

Final answer: You'd probably enjoy it, yes, but I wouldn't make it a first priority. It is somewhat of a rehash of earlier themes. (less)
