I am 50% finished reading this book. The story fascinates me but I'm wondering if the violence and abuse continue to happen throughout the book. I want to know what happens, but am growing weary of page after page of horrific mistreatment of the "inmates". Does it ever turn from gory to actually telling the story?

Did anyone else think it would have been a much stronger book if it had been written in first person? Writing in third person meant the writer had to tell us SO much with little “showing.” If I were the editor I’d have made her rewrite the whole thing in first person. It’s a DNF for me.
