Kevin Perhaps it can be said that the protagonist's sociopathic cruelty, which continuously escalates with no more than (at most) a brief twinge of remorse …morePerhaps it can be said that the protagonist's sociopathic cruelty, which continuously escalates with no more than (at most) a brief twinge of remorse on his part, demonstrates the extreme (but not entirely illogical) endpoint of characterizing the "poor and downtrodden" as useless eaters and such. Because once the baseline level of human dignity and compassion is withdrawn, consciously and intentionally or otherwise, it's not really such an extreme leap from there to where the character ends up.

This answer may be a bit more generalized than you'd like, partly because it's been a few years since I read the book.(less)
