I read all of Tamora Pierce's Tortall books when I was a preteen and teenager, but I never read the Emelan series. My niece will be turning eight this summer, and she's academically advanced. Would this book be appropriate to her age, or should I wait another year?

One character's parents have died from smallpox and at one point she dreams of their corpses - though the images described here are not graphic, they could be disturbing for an eight-year-old. Some of the other things the author describes (e.g. how to use a spinning wheel) can be confusing to follow, but a quick skim through these passages does not keep the reader from understanding the overall plot.
