As a high school English and History teacher I always wanted to teach a unit on death. Never did. Always got strange looks from colleagues. Can you understand their attitude?

I do understand their attitude although I don’t share it. Death is a natural part of life that many young people are no longer exposed to. Even if someone does while you’re young, it’s likely that you won’t see the body as the process has become so sanitized. On the other hand, depending on where you teach, you might find that many of your students have experienced their friends and family members dying from gun violence and are traumatized by it.
You could teach the history of how death is dealt with in this country and how it has changed over the centuries, or different cultural practices around death across the world. It could open up some great discussions among students so long as it’s sensitively done. I’d love to have taken a class like this in high school!(less)
