Perhaps this seems like nit-picking, but I don't understand how Gran could enter the house with Iris on pages 20/32, after Violet had bolted the door on page 17? Or is this part of the magic?!

Does this book repeatedly go back and forth in time? I have really gotten sick of that type of novel. I don't mind a few flashbacks, but back and forth constantly drives me nuts.
