I don’t understand the motivation of Archie and Seela accusing Robert of robbery and assault. Also it didn’t make sense to me as a first offender that he would be sent to a maximum prison. I loved the book but this storyline confused me. It seemed like the author wanted to have Robert serve a prison sentence to further the plot?

I thought this book was rich, relatable and thought provoking. However, without spoiling it for others, near the end, there was a revelation that I though was really trite. It had to do with Heidi and Maude. What did everyone think?

I'm in the middle of Polly's husband telling her about his new project (after she sees a letter to him from his university). Is there much more between the two of them & between her & her selfish son? This book is generally highly rated but I won't go on if I have to hear more conversations that I find intolerable. Thanks to whoever answers.

Roberta Sallee Dena, I just finished the book. The second half is better and faster and makes it all worthwhile.

Why is it classified has historical fiction?

The threads of the Society of Friends throughout the book delighted me. I've also read books by Edith Maxwell who is/was a Quaker. Is Alice Elliott Dark a Quaker?

A minor point, but Maud says that Clemmie was named for Clemence, a character in a book she read and liked. Any thoughts re. the book/character? I could only think of the actress Clemence Poesy (a favorite of mine).
