I personally haven't liked Rowling's children's books since the o.g. Harry Potter series (and the short story about James and Sirius).

Both Ickabog and Christmas Pig are depressing and tedious to get through. JKR's signature wit and humor are missing, the characters aren't as interesting as the HP ones, the morals are preachy, and the plot twists aren't very good.

Even though this story is close to JKR and her family, the heart is missing, and it doesn't feel like a real adventure story.

Note: If you're going to give this to your kids for Christmas, make sure you preview the chapters beforehand; it's gets really heavy, very fast.(less)
