The song title references a real plant called "The Surprise Lily," a flowering plant native to China and Korea. It gets such a name because its leaves will sprout first, then die. Not too long after this, its blossoms will bloom as the surprise.

Because of its stepwise sprouting, the Surprise Lily is a symbol of lovers who are ill-fated to be apart, much like how the leaves of this plant can never exist at the same time as its flowers.
