The book doesn't assume any knowledge of characters or the world, but to me it seemed to be missing some essential context. It felt very much like a spinoff from something I'm unfamiliar with, and the meaning of the story wound up feeling a bit lost.(less)

Rhinnan Sounds like what Rosemary did to Edgar was a precursor to the experiments she conducts on the patients at the institute that she founded with Miriam.
