in the end of the book Teresa and her grandmother set off to find her father and uncle who left to look for gold, Teresa finds them and when they return to the campsite Teresa finds her little sister has died of a fever that was going around, they bury her at the campsite and head off to join back with the other travellers and that's where the book ends(less)
