I distinctly remember reading <spoiler>Melody mentioning in the book itself that she hated being called special/special needs</spoiler>, and then I thought Huh. Weird. That contradicts the terrible, misleading blurb! but obviously, I was happy about that and continued with my life.

If you're still not convinced, I will add that I'm also disabled and attend a camp for disabled kids that's an awful lot like Melody's. It's an experience I have a really hard time explaining to able-bodied folk just how important and significant it has been, but Draper captures it beautifully. Like, it has me crying and then laughing within a few pages of each other because the author seems to understand the huge value that having friends is to a disabled, constantly isolated kid, and that is portrayed with both sentimental stuff and plain childhood fun.

I really recommend it despite the blurb, it really is magical.(less)
