Is there a drug you can take that makes reading all the Nature Descriptions bearable? I might as well ask about football then too. I can't imagine how anyone can read all the bilge about the exact color of trees or the sky or ... sit through a football game. But then, I've never smoked marijuana.

They are integral to the books, like the "incidental" music in a good film. I love Hardy's connection with the natural world (something he valued highly) but then I don't think Hardy's story lines are that good and when the destination is not my only reason for travelling, I am happy to enjoy the scenery.(less)
