Would I need to, or should I first, read the three previous books before this one? Or does it stand on it's own if one has not read any of the others. (I read the whole Clifton series).

What era are these books written in? "Over My Dead" body just seems to be so stiff and old-fashioned. The other reason I was wondering about this is that (I think) it was the Grandfather (?), on the ship, was born in 1921 making him 100 y.o. even. I've tried everywhere to get this question answered, and I have NOT read any others in this series.
