I'm trying to comprehend the actual meaning of this line in context on page 55 — "She was my only connection, holding the cup at the other end of the string". I assumed that "holding the cup at the other end of the string" could possibly be an idiom but I didn't find so in my different keyword search in Google. Hope someone in this community can help me to understand the meaning intended over here?
