Mercy had had her mothers critical voice internalised and continually eroding her self esteem. (less)

When Eugene phones Mercy as she is making her way to Darwin, the call drops in and out, with only two or three words decipherable. Did they have any significance to the story? I felt I missed something in this and kept thinking it would be a significant plot point.
