Early in our country's settlement, needed items for daily living were mostly imported and costly. Housewives kept the scraps from worn out clothing and stitched them together then sewed on a backing stuffed with wool or cotton. These layers were sewed together with fine stitches that became known as quilting. Farm women held "quilting bees" where they got together as a group at someone's home and worked on a quilt together. As time went by, women designed colorful blocks, or patterns, and named them, such as Corns and Beans, Lord Nelson's Victory, Toad in a Pond, etc. Women still quilt the traditional blocks, but many quilters have evolved into artists and produce stunning quilts that win blue ribbons at state and county fairs.(less)
