The authors clearly have a lot of admiration for Barnum and that can be kind of tricky in developing your own opinions on the man. He's a hard figure to pin down and he did some shady stuff. Try looking at The Colossal P.T. Barnum Reader by James Cook, it has his selected writings, advertisements, and letters. I also like Weird and Wonderful: the Dime Museum in America by Dennett it has a large section on Barnum and explores the before and after his cultural influence. (less)
