It is about various types of intimacies, not necessarily just good ones. In an interview (links in my review), the author talks about intimacy as an act of aggression (several examples from the book come to mind). The author also mentioned that the protagonist's emotional vacancy is what led to her fast connections and rapid intimacy to Adriaan and the female friends. In addition, all of the relationships are fraught with lack of trust so those intimacies are complex.(less)

The protagonist's relationships with the two female friends, Jana and Eline, are important because she is new to the City . She quickly made friends, which unfortunately had wrinkles despite seeming to be quick bonds. There wasn't really a problem with Eline, but it provided the connection with her twin brother Anton and their problems. Jana is central to the story in several ways, including the protagonist's feelings about her behavior toward Adriaan.(less)
