In the harsh climate of postwar Germany, Austria, actually the great majority of Europe women were a commodity as readily as cigarettes were. This is a hard boiled detective series and it doesn't stray from the conventions of that genre, it's just set within a historical framework. Women are depicted largely as commodities and there is the worn cliche of 'the whore with the heart of gold' in it, as well. You may wish to avoid it.(less)
