The answer to this question will depend on whether I read it or not. The Pale Criminal used the brutalization of girls simply as a plot device and i am done with books like that. Does this one do the same or does it explore female characters as full human beings in a sympathetic way?

This is a hard boiled detective series and it doesn't stray from the conventions of that genre, it's just set within a historical framework. Women are depicted largely as commodities and there is the worn cliche of 'the whore with the heart of gold' in it, as well. You may wish to avoid it.(less)
