I was thinking that at the beginning but Maddie isn't tied to Hugo in any way.

Hugo's wife was Rosie.

In fact, It wasn't even about Maddie for Hugo, it was about Clay and Clay is wherever Maddie is.

The lock of hair is so that wherever Hugo showed up he was a wanted criminal for his wife's murder and that as long as Clay kept that as an anchor any future where the hair traveled to Hugo's wife would already be murdered and Hugo wanted for that murder.

So then, now that Clay is dead and his anchors are in the past, is Rosie alive again?

Marlana The murders are not described in detail. There are a few sentences about blood each time, but that is about it. Hope that helps.

This is what the author chose as one of his rules, but like the other comment said - how could they actually know that since they can't go back?

But as in answer to that, they can't go back, but they can move on without each other. So, for instance, in the end, Hugo moves on after The Time Team left him, so he could go and look and see that those people are no longer in existence.

But then if he moves on after them is he now on a different track? Will he never now be able to meet up with them?.... Lots of questions to explore going down that rabbit hole.

But basically, the author chose a full replacement leaving a wake of missing persons behind.

What happened to those existing versions of them? That is one question we don't get answered, unfortunately. (less)
