Early on in the book, as the characters are describing the murders, was anyone else reminded of the 2014 Slenderman stabbing?

Britta Michael Price‘s killers are known from the start. They were 2 teenagers copying Charlie Crabtree. They confess in the first chapter.

Where does this story take place? I only ask because I like audiobooks but for some reason I cannot stand listening to an English accent. If it's America, I'd love to read it!
