Would this series make for a good follow-up read to Will Durant's Story of Civilization? This series starts pretty much where Durant ends, but the works are clearly nowhere near as "universal" as Durant's, as he terms his approach to history. However, since Durant was unable to realize the creation of a complete history of civilization down to his own day, something else must suffice instead: does this series?

It is in my opinion a history of celebrities that is wonderful as story but aimless as regards ideas, trends and forces apart from political machinations. Hobshawm is a tougher slog, but more informative as a survey of the period. I recommend it highly.(less)
