When Claire and Whitaker visit the group home, the author tells the reader about two cardinals resting on the stoop and flying away when Claire closes the car door. Many people believe that cardinals are symbols of visitors from heaven. Is that the author’s reason for including the cardinals in the story?

When Claire first sees the picture of Orlando, she describes him as a “white kid with a broad nose and straight brown hair partially covering one eye.” Why does the author mention what race Orlando is? Do you think White kids are treated the same way Black/Brown kids are treated in foster care? Was this kid’s experience in foster care similar to what most kids in foster care experience of what we think they should ?

Judy No. This takes place in St. Petersburg and Sarasota, Florida with lots of famous landmarks mentioned.
