It's not that I do not believe a mature teen couldn't or shouldn't read this, but rather, it should be noted that most Greek myths are...well, pretty awful. This retelling is pretty good, but it doesn't leave out the grisly details.(less)

However, whether or not it was genuine is another question and probably up to the reader's interpretation.
Personally, I saw it more as Phaedra's need for rebellion against the confines of her life, and her unconscious revenge against Theseus, even to the point of self-destruction. She didn't necessarily love Hippolytus, she loved the idea of the pure innocent love she was denied, and perhaps even more than that, she loved the idea of irrecoverably disrupting her life.(less)
