Although this book is set during the Civil War, there is no gratuitous violence and sex. It's an excellent book.(less)

To me, it showed how her character developed over the course of t…moreI personally loved the ending for Ann-May's story. She loses everything but the cat. To me, it showed how her character developed over the course of the book. Even the cat could see the change in her. Maybe only the cat could see the change, but animals are awesome like that.

Was I rooting for her to end up in jail? Of course, I was. But it seemed unlikely, once she showed her willingness to cooperate with the authorities, that she would be hanged or even do major jail time. We see that in our "justice" system all the time today. You turn somebody else in, you get a lessened sentence.

Perfectly believable, understandable, and it was a satisfying ending to her story, as far as I was concerned. (less)
