Nora is inspired by other women who 'snuck in' to scientific careers though their family connections like astronomer Caroline Herschel, Doctor Maria Della Donne, and anatomist Anna Manzolini.
More is written about the men, unfortunately. We had to dig deeper to learn about the women. But there are two fascinating books featuring Hunter and Snow that I highly recommend: The Knife Man by Wendy Moore and Stephen Johnson's The Ghost Map. (less)

There are some descriptions of medical procedures and terms of body parts if you are squeamish, but all are given in a strictly medical sense as someone squeamish myself it did not make me uncomfortable. Romance when present is very restrained and "respectable" Nothing more than a short kiss is described. I believe the words whore and bastard were both used once but that would be it.
