It probably won't change anyone's beliefs on the war but it does a really good job humanizing the actors involved, along with their interactions among each other and the Iraqis they encounter. As one would expect from the complexities of the engagement and the struggles many soldiers have encountered upon return to civilian life, these interactions were complicated and often difficult to pass judgement on. The author embedded himself in 1st Recon Bn for two months and this book is a result of that experience and reporting. My guess is that a bunch of Goodreads users have shelved this as "military fiction" either because they haven't read the book yet and think that it's fictional, or because they want to keep all of their military books shelved together (regardless of which titles are nonfiction and which are not).(less)
