I might concede that the first chapter is dull and flat. I think the first time I tried to read Tom's Midnight Garden when I was at primary school this may have put me off, as I really do not remember that I finished it. But as a grown adult I tried again, plodded through the first two chapters, and was glad I did, because I think the story really lifts off, and, after Tom and Hatty have met each other, this becomes a truly compelling read. Chapter 23: skating, about how Tom and Hatty go skating to Ely Cathedral is a favourite episode of mine.
