I am glad I read it. If you want a book that only has a few main characters and flows along on one track, you might find it challenging. I felt all the women that were main characters - Venetia, Emma, Beth, Stella, Diana - were strong women. They might not have started out really strong, but they all had there own story and were even stronger by the end of the book as were the women that were secondary characters. Yes, you might get a little confused in the first 5 or 6 chapters and need too reread some parts until you catch on, but it is so worth it. I will definitely reread it in a few years.(less)

Of course I know that hemlock is toxic, but I had no idea that hydrangea (which I have lots of!) can be too! Even snowdrops are poisonous! I was very shocked at the list. It is interesting that the toxic plants were only in the winter garden and that it was locked. As it mentioned in the book, winter can be a time for death for plants and is also used in describing the seasons of human life with winter describing death. I also think about “beauty” …… what extremes we will go to for beauty of ourselves and our surroundings. (less)
