The book is based on a few real people who have shared their stories, and there are sections where the author is retelling those stories as if it was happening. But it will then cut away and give a lot of facts about what else was going on in the world at the time, which adds contexts to those stories.

I think this is a much easier read than a lot of other non-fiction books that I've read, if that helps :)(less)

However, there is great discussion on sexism, gender and racial discrimination, sexualization, and the Vietnam War. These can be heavier topics, but I think a middle schooler has the potential to handle those discussions. (less)
