I am a little over 100 pages into this book & really struggling to feel invested in the characters or the story. I can certainly appreciate Vargas Llosa's writing for it's skill and polish, but I find myself getting bored before I get to the end of each chapter. Does the tone and/or pace pick up at any point, or is it this dense the whole way through? I am not afraid of long, dense tomes but I can't get into this one!

Juan In Spanish it says that they slit the throat of the Little Blessed One right there, in the Sanctuary, "mientras el artista-fotógrafo tomaba la foto". …moreIn Spanish it says that they slit the throat of the Little Blessed One right there, in the Sanctuary, "mientras el artista-fotógrafo tomaba la foto". In Spanish that can mean both, that he took a photograph of the Little Blessed One or that he kept taking the photograph he was previously asked to take of the Counselor while they killed the Little Blessed One right there, in the same room.
I believe "while the artist-photograph Flavio de Barros took THE photograph" would have been a more faithful translation that "while the artist-photograph Flavio de Barros took A photograph". The photograph might not exist, it might have been that the translator got confused.(less)
