Did anyone... anywhere... see any indication other than her brief prayer to Mary where Madeline showed her faith and trust in God? I've very quickly read this book b/c my daughter has a book report on it. The school seems to be convinced that Madeline showed her faith and trust in God. All I saw was a brave kid with meager resources. I'm loath to disagree with the school, but I do not see religious undertones.
