It is an essay on a real story from the Seventeenth Century, and Huxley is not the only one who wrote about it. This explains the chapters about mistycism, and the Appendix.

Iwaszkiewicz was Polish and did not won the Nobel (I think he was a serious contendent though), but I think this is the book you look for(less)
