Andy I think he attacks the director because he sees himself in the director--both obsessed with the holocaust, both willing and willingly sacrificing them…moreI think he attacks the director because he sees himself in the director--both obsessed with the holocaust, both willing and willingly sacrificing themselves in pursuit of knowledge, understanding and 'ownership' of the atrocities.
The narrator 'tricked' his students and others by springing hard to answer questions and putting them, as if by ambush, into the middle of the atrocities he is describing. just like that, the director does the same to the narrator--tricking him into being a living part of and witness to his film...
that's my take, anyway...great book, really hard to get it out of my mind.(less)
