He sacrificed his own happiness to keep her safe, and that is true love. As for why he did not go looking for her, it's because he thinks it is still not safe for her to return home. It's pretty obvious why jane doesn't want to be found, the love of her life sent her away without any explanation and then she finds out that he is engaged to someone else and also her best friend Abbi is now friends with Shandra. Jane feels betrayed and hurt. That's a story of anguish and heartbreak like the ones I love about this author.(less)
