I've read the book and found that yes, racism is definitely shown. Racism of the female gender. Racism of the classes. The seven women that are the central part of the story come from different backgrounds, but all must push against the prejudice that was alive and well in the 1800's. Sad to say women still face some of these outlandish beliefs and continue to have to do twice as much to be recognized for their achievements. It has been an uphill battle for as long as history has been recorded. There are few and rare examples of women being treated as equals or more knowledgeable than their male counterparts. Education begins in the home and I fear we may be a long way from achieving equality. Education, professions and leadership will always be a harder battle for the female species. It may be a good thing that we are smarter when dealing with bullies. (less)
