His mom was going to visit him in the north to tell him this 'good news' but did not make the trip because she was at the end of her pregnancy. It was then that Amerigo said he would not return to the south. Forty five years later, that brother-and his wife were involved in some shady business dealings. They had a child Carmine. During this time Amerigo' mom stepped up as a grandmother and was raising Carmine. Then she died when her son and daughter in law were in jail. The mother was released from jail so Amerigo did not have to take Carmine as his ward. (less)
