What actually happens in the scene where Billy is lying in the canal, needing to be rescued, and a man named Thad is lying outstretched on the nearby bank of the canal? Is this the murder scene later referred to that gets Billy arrested? The details don't seem to match up.

We had not really been told much about Billy's background before, but the story he tells about Trompette rescuing him is a hint that he has had trouble. (less)
