I just saw the recommendation by Emma Cline in the NYT and decided to give Mating a try - it's a formidable 450 pp book and usually I love short stories. But either this will pull me in or it won't.

(After the first 50 pages I have to say I'm not sure the narrator - female - so far reads authentically female to me; but if it did not bother Emma Cline I should shut up about that.)(less)
