My hubby says that, "Yeah," is used a lot on the islands. I've heard it used for agreement, to show understanding of the other person. It's used in pure Am. English conversations. "Eh" is carried over from Japanese. We lived in Japan six years in the 90's and heard that word used a LOT to surprise, wonder or to question. And since Gail writes of a Japanese community in Hawaii, it's a good word to signal that these people come from Japan, or are descendants of immigrants, and might be speaking in a different language.(less)
