The idea that it would not be possible to eat a mango or pawpaw on the way to work in WW2 Brisbane is interesting, especially when many of the older suburbs all have houses with mango trees in the backyard, and pawpaw (now sadly a fruit out of favour) was so easy to grow and almost a 'must grow' in many gardens which try to be somewhat self-sustaining. 2) Can you imagine having such a weight on their shoulders? They could never talk about their work and even when experiencing the most heartbreaking grief at the loss of their own menfolk, they had to hold their nerves and carry on.
