Silly question, but why do Elliot and Sarah have different last names? (Elliot has their mom's last name, and Sarah has their dad's last name). Was this ever explained in the book?

Jo I didn't even notice this when reading but since their parents are academics, I will share that I know a lot of people who have had discussions about …moreI didn't even notice this when reading but since their parents are academics, I will share that I know a lot of people who have had discussions about which last name to give their children without conforming to patriarchal traditions. It seems consistent with the mother's academic and other positions, as hinted at in the book, that they would organise last names in this way.(less)
