It's not a gratuitous or expositional catalogue of abuse. The general lack of authorial sadism is what makes the book so good, in my opinion.(less)

Doesn't this take place mostly in the 60s? There's a part where the Salvation Army wants to charge Lucy 20 dollars for a used baby pram. 20 dollars in the 1960s at a thrift shop?

Anyone in Canada NOT yet read this book? Look on it as your duty. It should be required reading in grades 8/9.

Is there not a major plot hole in this book? In the first Kenny chapter, he describes escaping on the night after the day Howie is motionless in bed and taken to the hospital. But then in one of the Howie chapters much later in the book, Howie describes how after returning from the hospital Kenny showed him how to escape down to the dock to meet his uncle... Wouldn't Kenny have been gone by then?
