Edward accuses her of being a virgin, but he doesn’t seem to mean in this in the strictly literarily sense, as he continues, “if you had ten men a night you’d still be a virgin.” I think his idea is that because of her failure to produce a child, combined with her cold, conservative manner and unalluring physique, she might as well be a virgin, in his eyes less than a real woman. We are also informed that this incident takes place, “toward the end of the third year of their marriage, and a full year after [Edward’s] being deprived of his wife’s bed,” implying that at least at the beginning of their marriage they had shared a bed (presumably partaking there in the conventional relations of man and wife)(less)
