I personally had some difficulty with the novel On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous for this reason. This is a novel that is very much against the hunting of animals by humans. She gets new names for almost everyone she meets, but the animals do not have names, so she treats the name of each species as a given name to each creature. (less)

I wonder if its no body even bothers to get her name right because she is not seen as a viable member of society. The fact that they constantly say her name wrong is another sign that she is viewed as insignificant. (less)
