I tried reading this book, but gave up after trying to decipher the various Johns in the story. I am not a Christian and have a very high level idea of Christ's life. Is there any kind of starter kit that can help me understand the important characters and how they are related in the novel? I liked Ki Longfellow's writing in Houdini Heart and want to give this book another try.

John of the River, John the Baptizer, and John of Kefar Imi are all the same person. I was confused too for awhile, the names were interchanged a lot, I imagine there was a reason why the author did this, but I'm not sure why.(less)
