I would like to hear what readers thought about David Guterson's East of the Mountains? I have just finished it and I'm wondering whether to suggest it to a book club I'm in. I think Guterson writes beautifully and I was struck by how he evokes the magic of place in his descriptions of Washington State, his war experience, and how the character of Ben Givens is developed over time.

Very hones…moreI just finished reading the book today for my book club and did enjoy it. It was different than Snow on Cedars but powerful in its own way. Very honest and straightforward, with a lot left unsaid but filled in by the description of the surroundings and the locale and the memories. Beautifully descriptive and highlights the importance of life in a realistic way. Shows us how we all affect those around us and that life is truly worthwhile. I would recommend it for a book club reading, especially for your 50+ group. Enjoy!(less)
