The blurb above describes this novel as comic. I found myself wondering about this? The power of it (for me) is the evocation of the past world of the market town which is now gone irretrievably. George keeps going against all his disappointments, but there's a strong sense it's downhill all the way - or have I missed something? Maybe I should read it again! Peter

It's a tragi-comic story of a middle aged man who weathers some of his frustrations thinking about the past and his growing up in a rather rural area and small town. He returns 30 years later only to find that even this part of the world has changed.
Well-written and such a change from Orwell's usual subjects. I truly enjoyed it.(less)
